Obama nominates openly lesbian commissioner

President Barack Obama has nominated an openly lesbian  professor for the position of one of the five commissioners of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Chai R Feldblum, a Professor of Law at the Georgetown University Law Center, is a leading expert on the Employment Non-discrimination Act and has extensive experience of HIV/AIDS-related law, having served as Legislative Counsel to the AIDS Project of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Some idea of Feldblum's commitment to the cause can be gleaned from the titles of her published writings, which include Moral Conflict and Liberty: Gay Rights and Religion, The Right to Define One's Own Concept of Existence: What Lawrence Can Mean for Intersex and Transgender People, and Gay is Good: The Moral Case for Marriage Equality and More.

In a statement referring to Feldblum as well as nominees for other positions, President Obama said: "This group brings a dedication and expertise in their fields that will serve this administration and the American people well. As we work to advance equal rights, keep our nation safe, and put our country back on a path to prosperity, I look forward to working with these fine individuals in the months and years ahead."

Feldblum's is just the latest of the president's nominations of out lesbians: in May he nominated Kathy Greenlee for a position at the Department of Health and Human Services and Seattle attorney Jenny Durkan as US attorney for the Western District of Washington, which is to be taken up today by the US Senate Judiciary Committee.
