Boyzone singer found dead
By: Nigel Robinson

Stephen Gately

Stephen Gately has died.

The Boyzone singer was found dead on Saturday while on holiday with his partner in Majorca. He was 33 years old.

Gately was a founder member of the boy band Boyzone, who had six Number One hits between 1994 and 2000, and who have recently reformed.

In 1999 he came out as gay in a “World Exclusive” in the Sun, and in 2006 entered into a civil partnership with internet businessman Andrew Cowles who had been introduced to him by Elton John and David Furnish.

When Boyzone first broke up he went to follow a solo recording career, as well as appearing in the musicals Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Boyzone reformed in 2008, and the controversial video for their single “Better” featured Gately in a romantic embrace with another man.

Gately is said to have gone out for drinks on Saturday night in Majorca and then returned to his holiday accommodation to sleep and never woke up.

The cause of his death currently remains unknown.
