Gately family denies Stephen was on eight-hour drinking binge

Stephen Gately's family have denied that the Boyzone singer was on an eight-hour drinking binge before his death. Gately's body was found in his holiday apartment in Majorca at about 1pm on Saturday by his partner, Andrew Cowles, and a guest, named as Giorgio Dochev.

Today, Gerald Kean, the family lawyer, said that Gately he was in very good form when relatives spoke to him on Friday night and that a close relative spoke to the singer at 12.30am on Saturday as he was getting ready to leave the apartment.

"An eight-hour drinking session is something we do not accept," Kean said. "Wherever that is coming from, our information would suggest that is simply wrong. We are not saying he was not drinking but eight hours is not something we accept.

"He was a very sensible man. He enjoyed himself, he loved life. I was with him many a night and, if anything, late into nights he would look as though he had just arrived."

The postmortem examination is expected to be completed tomorrow. Spanish police have said that there were "no signs of suspicious circumstances".
