George Michael: 'Elton needs to shut his mouth'

Elton John has been told George Michael is in 'a bad way'

Friends of George Michael who are worried about his mental and physical health have contacted Sir Elton John asking for his help, John's civil partner David Furnish has revealed.

Appearing on Victoria Derbyshire's Radio 5 Live programme this morning, Furnish said: "They keep calling us and saying 'you have to do something, George is in a bad way'.

"A lot of people are saying it to us, we get it very very regularly, that they are concerned about his health, concerned about his state of mind and wellbeing and that as Elton has been there and experienced sobriety for 19 years now, that perhaps he's best positioned to be able to help out."

But he added: "If he doesn't want help or...doesn't think he needs help, that's fine."

On Saturday, Michael gave an interview to the Guardian in which he said that John "will not be happy until I bang on his door in the middle of the night saying, 'Please, please, help me, Elton. Take me to rehab.' It's not going to happen." He added: "Elton just needs to shut his mouth and get on with his own life."

Asked about his drug use, he said that although he used to smoke around 25 joints a day, he has cut down to "about seven or eight", but admitted to using crack cocaine on the occasion of his arrest for possession last year and refused to say when he last smoked it. He said that he lost his driving licence in 2007 after being found slumped at the wheel of his car not because he was drunk or stoned but because he "got done for exhaustion and sleeping pills".

Michael also denied rumours that he and boyfriend Kenny Goss had split up, and talked about the attractions of cruising on Hampstead Heath, but said he was not there often. "The handful of times it's bloody warm enough, I'll do it. I'll do it on a nice summer evening. Quite often there are campfires up there. It's a much nicer place to get some quick and honest sex than standing in a bar, E'd off your tits shouting at somebody and hoping they want the same thing as you do in bed."
