Ziggy Stardust is the greatest gay album of all time
In a poll conducted by American gay website Out to find the hundred greatest gay albums ever, David Bowie’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, was praised as “one of the most liberating, uplifting records of all time”.
Boy George commented on the album: “At a time when social and sexual taboos were just starting to break down, Bowie as Ziggy created a world where the possibilities were limitless. You could be whatever you wanted to be.”
Other British artists in the top one hundred include The Smiths with their self-titled 1984 album at Number Two, George Michael for Faith (15) and Listen with Prejudice (18), as well as Elton John, Dusty Springfield, Pet Shop Boys, Queen, and Kate Bush
Non-British artists featured in the top gay one hundred include unsurprisingly Madonna, k.d. laing, Scissor Sisters and Donna Summer.
