Isherwood documentary tells of 30-year gap love affair

"The two went on to become lovers with Isherwood defying the social codes of the day and living openly as a gay man"

When they met on a beach in California, Christopher Isherwood was a fortysomething writer famous for his Berlin novels that would eventually become Cabaret and Don Bachardy was a 16-year-old. What happened next is probably one of the great love stories of the 20th century.

In a new documentary - Chris and Don: A Love Story - Bachardy, himself a respected artist, says that he was seduced by the man on the beach and as a teenager wanted nothing more than to be seduced. The two went on to become lovers with Isherwood defying the social codes of the day and living openly as a gay man, taking his young lover to Hollywood parties and literary events with the likes of Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams.

With a supporting cast that includes those luminaries as well as the likes of Joan Crawford and Montgomery Clift, the documentary is already receiving rave reviews. And it makes for fascinating viewing with most of Hollywood assuming the couple were father and son and with some actors openly hostile to these "half men".

Details of UK screenings of the documentary which opens in New York today have yet to be announced by you can see the trailer by clicking here.
