Julian Clary celebrates 25 years as a 'drag terrorist'

"Clary has consistently tested the boundaries. He is, in many ways, a drag terrorist, though his drag is rather toned down these days"

Julian Clary is set to celebrate 25 years as an out gay performer in a one-off performance at London's Southbank Centre.

Alongside his dog Valerie, Clary will discuss his career and life with journalist and author Paul Burston. The evening will commemorate his initiation into the House of Homosexual Culture's Hall of Fame - a gay institution likened to This Is Your Life.

The House of Homosexual Culture, which explores lesbian and gay culture, said of Clary:

"Through his many manifestations, from the Joan Collins Fan Club to his notorious joke about Norman Lamont, Clary has consistently tested the boundaries. He is, in many ways, a drag terrorist, though his drag is rather toned down these days."

Many recognise Clary as the face of gay alternative 80s comedy, and his refusal to hide his sexuality will be recognised throughout the performance. His TV highlights, including My Glittering Passage. Sticky Moments and All Rise for Julian Clary, will feature in the show, as well as a cabaret act from The Haddocks.

Taking time out from his career as a comedian, Clary is currently concentrating on his career as a writer. His autobiography, entitled  A Young Man's Passage, was hugely successful, and his first novel has recently been published as a paperback.

His appearance will be the first in a series of events dedicated to people who have made an impact on gay and lesbian cultural history.

See Julian Clary at the Southbank Centre on 28th September.
