Doctor Who?

Russell Tovey
An out gay star could be the next BBC leading man
"Russell Tovey, at 26, would be the youngest to take on the iconic role. He would also be the first gay 'Doctor' on the children's science fiction programme. "
The creator of Doctor Who has revealed who he would ideally like to succeed David Tennant - an out gay actor.
Russell Tovey, at 26, would be the youngest to take on the iconic role. He would also be the first gay 'Doctor' on the children's science fiction programme.
Creator Russell T Davies may have expressed an interest in Tovey, but it seems that the actor has different ideas. In a recent interview he said:
"I want to play really dark, fucked-up characters, I want to play characters like drag queens, rent boys, someone who has been abused, a rapist."
However, Davies' reputation could convince him otherwise. Davies accepted an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in June for his contribution to television and his gay series Queer of Folk was an institution.
He is also in the process of creating another drama, which will focus on the lives of forty-something gay men.
Tovey appeared in the show's Christmas special, Voyage of the Damned, as Midshipman Frame, and so already has a relationship with the programme. Whether that relationship continues is another matter.
