Richard Wilson to host Stonewall Awards

British comedy legend Richard Wilson has confirmed he will be hosting the prestigious Stonewall Awards next month.
Most famous for playing the iconic Victor Meldrew in the BBC’s One Foot in the Grave, Wilson will be following in the footsteps of Sir Ian McKellen who hosted the awards last year.
Chief executive of Stonewall Ben Summerskill said he was “absolutely delighted.” He continued: "There are many occasions in the past when he might have won one himself."
Wilson, who is gay, has been a star of the stage and screen for over 40 years. Throughout his illustrious career he has appeared in British TV classic’s such as Doctor Who, Some Mothers Do Ave Em, Only When I Laugh, Inspector Morse, Crown Court and Father Ted.
His most famous role to date was as misery Victor Meldrew in One Foot in the Grave, which enjoyed success for six series across ten years. He was awarded an OBE in 1994.
This year’s Stonewall Awards will be held in the Victoria & Albert Museum on 6th November. Nominees include Simon Amstell from Never Mind the Buzzcocks, singer Sam Sparro and Mary Queen of Shops host Mary Portas for Entertainer of the Year.
MP Iris Robinson has been nominated for the Bigot of the Year award, the winner of which is voted for by Stonewall supporters. Gay Bishop Gene Robinson is up for Hero of the Year.
