Liverpool, European Culture Capital 2008, is the Gay Capital of Culture in November too
The city’s fifth annual Homotopia festival takes place in November with a star-studded celebration of gay-themed arts, theatre, dance, and performance and cabaret events.
Highlights of the month-long festival include the world premiere of Drama Queen, local playwright Shaun Duggan’s new play set in Liverpool’s clubland.
An Evening with Holly Woodlawn is a celebration of the legendary Warhol superstar, who “shaved her legs and then he was a she”, and who will be making a special personal appearance at the Festival.
There is also the chance to take in a major retrospective of cult gay artist, Tom of Finland, and international art collaborations featuring work from Iceland, Norway and the USA.
Liverpool legend April Ashley will be reminiscing on her ground-breaking role as one of the first transsexual people to undergo gender confirmation surgery.
There will be also be talks and conversations with, among others, award-winning authors Jake Arnott and Jackie Kaye, and a special Art Cabaret with the inimitable David Hoyle and artist and queer icon Maggi Hambling.
Homotopia will also be hosting Liverpool Is Burning, a grand vogue ball on 8th November in the sumptuous Adelphi Hotel, which Homotopia promises will be the “poshest do” of the entire festival.
