Sacha Baron Cohen causes a stir as Brüno at Proposition 8 rally
"This is just the latest in what have been high profile stunts that Baron Cohen has undertaken for the film"
Sacha Baron Cohen has upset marchers at a Proposition 8 rally, by turning up as his gay alter-ego Brüno.
The British comedian, best known for his characters Ali G and Borat, performed the stunt for his new film Brüno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt.
Baron Cohen was wearing a blonde wig as Brüno, who is a camp Austrian fashionista, but his identity was revealed by protesters and he was swiftly removed from the rally by the film producers.
This is just the latest in what have been high profile stunts that Baron Cohen has undertaken for the film. Earlier this year he gate-crashed several high profile fashion shows and even made it onto the catwalk at Milan fashion Week.
He also got into trouble earlier this year when he orchestrated a homoerotic exhibition in the conservative state of Arkansas, where he falsely advertised a caged wrestling event, promising ‘hot chicks, cold beer and hardcore fights’, only to showcase two men kissing in a cage.
Baron Cohen is no stranger to controversy. His last film, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan saw several upset participants file lawsuits against the comedian for misrepresentation. However, the film was a huge commercial and critical success and went on to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
His latest appearance as Brüno highlights the California’s mixed feelings towards Proposition 8, which wants to ban gay marriage in the state. Californians vote on the subject tomorrow.
