"Other nominations include Gus Van Santââ¬â¢s Milk, which has been nominated for an impressive eight Oscars"
The annual Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Award nominations have been revealed and British productions Skins and Torchwood are two of the contenders to pick up the prestigious gongs.
Channel 4’s youth orientated series Skins is nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series and the BBC’s Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood is up for Outstanding Drama Series.
The GLAAD Awards honour the people behind the programmes that offer fair representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
Skins was written and produced by a host of young talent in Britain, among which was gay TV presenter Simon Amstell. The series featured a prominent gay character Maxxie, played by Mitch Hewer, who has since gone on to star in Brittania High.
Torchwood stars openly gay actor John Barrowman as the lascivious Captain Jack who proved hugely popular in the new series of Russell T. Davies’ Doctor Who.
Other nominations include Milk, Gus Van Sant’s biopic of gay rights activist Harvey Milk, which has been nominated for an impressive eight Oscars.
Neil G. Giuliano, President of GLAAD said of the award nominations:
“The 20th anniversary of the GLAAD Media Awards is an excellent opportunity to reflect on how media representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community have evolved over the past two decades, clearly helping shape and evolve people's hearts and minds about LGBT people,"
"GLAAD's media advocacy and anti-defamation work as a resource for media professionals, combined with enabling LGBT people and allies to be compelling storytellers, has played a significant role in stories about our lives achieving greater visibility and being more compelling, honest, and real than ever before.”
Three GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held; the first of which is in New York on 28th March. The second ceremony will be in Los Angeles on 18th April and finally the last one will be held in San Francisco on 9th May. For more information, visit the official GLAAD website.
Founded in 1985, GLAAD is a non-profit organization of LGBT activism that is "dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of people and events in the media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation".
