Feeling frontman calls on gay pop stars to do the right thing
"The world would be a healthier place if people were more honest about their sexuality"
As a gay man growing up in a gay family, the subject of whether to be out or not was never an issue for Feeling frontman Dan Gillespie Sells. Formally announcing his sexuality in an interview with gay magazine Attitude, DGS had, as a child, accompanied his two mums on Gay Pride marches. Now he is calling for his fellow gay pop stars to follow his lead and be honest with the record-buying (or -downloading) public.
"The world would be a healthier place if people were more honest about their sexuality," he said in an interview with Scottish newspaper the Daily Record. "The more of us who come out, the easier it is for others."
Taking his place in the limited pantheon of openly gay pop stars that includes Boy George, Will Young, Stephen Gately and, most recently, Westlife's Mark Feehily, DGS has recently admitted that he has a boyfriend but has so far declined to reveal who it is. Commentators have noted, however, that his comments on pop stars coming out would hit harder in the US where there is yet to be a major gay pop star, mainly because many regional radio stations make a point of not playing tracks by openly gay artists. And then there's the question of Hollywood...
