Major Winchester III from M*A*S*H is gay
Actor David Ogden Stiers, who played the role of Major Charles Winchester in the cult TV series has come out at the age of sixty-six.
“I am gay and very proud to be so,” he told the blog GossipBoy.com.
After starring in M*A*S*H, Ogden Spiers has enjoyed a successful career as a voice actor. It was this career, he said, that persuaded him to remain in the closet for so many years, arguing that film studios might still be reluctant to employ openly gay men and women.
“I enjoy working and even though many have this idealistic belief that the entertainment industry and studios like Walt Disney are gay friendly. For the most part they are, but that doesn’t mean for them that business does not come first. It’s a matter of economics,” he said.
However, he admitted that many of his fears might have been imaginary.
“I’ve been working internally on whether they were the problem or if I just continued using them as an excuse long after the call for conservative private lives passed,” he said.
