Angelina Jolie is the world's top lesbian icon

That’s the result of a poll conducted among over two thousand gay women.

They voted the Tomb Raider star above Madonna at Number Two, Martina Navratilova (5) and Ellen DeGeneres (6).

One Poll, who organised the survey, told the Daily Telegraph: “Angelina was the clear winner, and she also has a dark side which many lesbians like too. All of the ladies in the poll appeal to women of all ages.”

Other celebrities appearing in the top twenty include Lady Gaga (7),  Liza Minnelli (11), Britney Spears (16) and Dolly Parton (20).

Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt have been highly visible supporters of LGBT rights and have stated that they will not marry until gay marriage is allowed throughout the United States.
