Year after year, international surveys recognise that Switzerland’s largest city offers the highest quality of life anywhere in the world.
It’s not difficult to see why. Overlooking the glorious crystal-clear waters of Lake Zürich, and surrounded by gentle hills and idyllic woods, with the Alps just a stone’s throw away, this historic city is set in one of the most beautiful areas of Europe.
Coupled with an easy-going and Mediterranean-like ambience, both in the quaint old town and in the trendy new Zürich West quarter, then it’s little wonder that Zürich is one Switzerland’s prime tourist destinations.
Indoors or outdoors, the visitor is spoilt for choice. With over fifty museums and more than 100 art galleries, a thriving arts scene, up-to-the-minute shopping including stylish international fashion houses and unique and contemporary Zürich designer labels, and more than two thousand bars and restaurants, there’s something here for everyone

Zürich also boasts the highest density of clubs in the country and during the balmy summer evenings the nightlife is not only found in these clubs but also outdoors: after nightfall, river and lakeside pools transform themselves into bars, stages and cinemas.
The city has one of the liveliest and most vibrant gay scenes in mainland Europe, based in the Old Town and Zürich West, and with a staggering variety of bars and cubs to suit every taste, as well as cultural events such as the Warmer Mai festival in May, featuring, among other things, the Swiss gay and lesbian film festival, Pink Apple, and in June the annual gay Pride celebrations.
