A gastronomic experience in Zuerich
By: Staff writer

Dining by Lake Zuerich

Zuerich is rather like a fine menu.

"Whether you prefer lifestyle restaurants, trendy gourmet temples inside old factory walls or local specialities in a traditional guild hall setting: Zürich has just the right ambiance for you "

The secret of its perfection lies in the quality of its individual ingredients.

One ingredient is high-quality gastronomy. A total of around 2,000 bars and restaurants pamper guests’ plates with culinary delicacies from all over the world. Enjoy top culinary creations by internationally renowned chefs, served in converted warehouses in former industrial districts or in elegant surroundings. Or make your way to the legendary Zeughauskeller, the best place to tuck into classic Swiss delicacies. Try your luck with Zürcher Geschnetzeltes and Rösti, creamy shredded veal served with crisp, buttery home-fried potatoes. The name alone is a mouthful! It may not be haute cuisine, but it’s certainly hearty and it’s a real Zürich experience.

For something just as Swiss but less meaty, Europe’s oldest vegetarian restaurant, the Hiltl, is well worth a visit. It has been around for over 100 years and has achieved cult-like status. The ways in which innovative ideas are implemented are more remarkable than ever before. The Blinde Kuh is quite literally indescribable. It is the first restaurant in the world to be run by blind people. Dine in total and utter darkness.

Whether you prefer lifestyle restaurants, trendy gourmet temples inside old factory walls or local specialities in a traditional guild hall setting: Zürich has just the right ambiance for you.

A place for Alfresco Dining

Switzerland’s mountains and ski resorts delude some into thinking of it as just a winter destination. In fact, summer temperatures in Zürich top 25ºC between June and August and there is little rain.

The good weather brings the beautiful people out to strut their stuff and soak up the rays along the shores of Lake Zürich and the banks of the river Limmat. The Schanzengraben Lido on the river that converts to the Rimini Bar encourages its guests to make their own meals with the bar’s barbecue.

Even away from the water, the summer brings hundreds of opportunities for dining alfresco. From the multitudinous café bars on the cobbled streets of Niederdorf and the quiet terraces of restaurants like Juan Costa in the old Hürlimann brewery, to the courtyard of the designer boutique hotel Greulich, open-air dining is quite a scene in Zürich in summer.
