The report in the American Journal of Public Health studied 67,000 residents in Massachusetts.
It found that 14 per cent of gay men were obese, compared to 21 per cent of straight men.
However, lesbians were likely to be larger than heterosexual women.
Twenty per cent of lesbians were likely to be obese, compared to 17 per cent of straight women.
Esther Rothblum, a professor of women’s studies at San Diego State University told MSNBC that people in sexual relations with men (straight women and gay men) are under more pressure to look thin and to conform to accepted types of attractiveness than people who are in relationships with women (lesbians and straight men).
The report also found that gay men and women were more likely to be smokers than straight men and women.
