Hepatitis B

The Terrence Higgins Trust is urging gay men to learn more about hepatitis

Today, 19 May, is World Hepatitis Day, and the Trust wants gay men to be more aware of the dangers of contracting the disease.

There are three types of hepatitis – A, B and C – all of which cause inflammation of the liver. They can be picked up in a variety of ways, and some sexual or drug-taking activities can put people at a greater risk.

Hepatitis C is the most dangerous of the three as it can remain undetected for years causing serious damage such as liver cancer. There is currently no preventative vaccine against Hepatitis C.

The Trust’s hepatitis website includes full information on all three forms of hepatitis, together with information on how to prevent and where to go for a test and treatment.

Marc Thompson, Deputy Head of Health Promotion at Terrence Higgins Trust said:

"Hepatitis A and B are easily avoided through free vaccinations offered to all gay and bisexual men at sexual health clinics but many men haven’t taken this up. It’s important that men know the facts about all the different types of Hepatitis and also how to reduce their risk. Check out the website and learn your hepatitis ABCs.”
