What's it like for a gay man working in the financial services industry?
As the EMEA Leadership Development Programme Manager, I work with an amazing group of people from different cultures, backgrounds, values and beliefs.
The work environment provides endless opportunities for engaging with colleagues both locally and globally and being accepted in the workplace for ‘who you really are’ is essential to how productive you can be.
Citi's continued commitment to Diversity, and specifically the LGBT agenda, is one of the main reasons why I have continued to develop and grow here since joining the company in 2002.
In addition to my primary responsibilities, I am a co-chair for the Citi Pride London network, an LGBT community that was launched in London in 2003.
The Citi Pride London network is part of the full Diversity agenda, which works to make Citi an employer of choice and attract, retain and develop the best and brightest professionals at Citi, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender or gender expression.
There are over fifty Diversity networks globally, and the London network focuses on five key areas:
- Staff Recruitment and Retention – Graduate campus recruitment, orientation, interns and summer programmes, engaging senior staff and increasing women’s membership
- Education and Training – Mentoring, leadership programmes, volunteering opportunities and training
- Professional Networking and Communications – Events sponsorship, external representation, internal network relationships and media relations
- Corporate Policy – Corporate policy, internal governance and supplier diversity
- Network Management – Strategy and succession planning and finance and budgets.
The Citi Pride network is currently supporting the charity East London Out Project (ELOP), a holistic lesbian and gay centre that provides a range of social, emotional and support services to LGBT communities. For further information about ELOP, please visit: www.elop.org
