Footballer suspended for saying gay players should not come out

The Western Bulldogs have suspended Jason Akermanis for two games after he wrote a newspaper article in which he said that there was no place for openly gay players in the macho world of Australian Football League.
As reported previously by Pride Life, Akermanis said that the presence of an openly gay player “would be international news and could break the fabric of a club”.
Akermanis’ views attracted enormous criticism, both in the news media and in public with his home and car being pelted by eggs.
The Bulldogs said that Akermanis has been suspended for two games because he had not passed the article for their approval before publishing it.
In a statement the team said: “We wish to make it clear that had we seen this article it would never have been approved.”
Akermanis, who has denied that he is anti-gay, has accepted his two-match suspension.
“At the end of the day I want to play in this team,” he said, “so I’ll do what it takes to play in that team.”
