Row over Germanys bunch of gays in World Cup
Michael Becker, the agent of Germany’s Captain, Michael Ballack, has reportedly criticised a “bunch of gays” playing in Germany’s World Cup team.
In an article in the latest issue of news magazine der Spiegel, journalist Alexander Osang recalls an interview with Becker in which he identified which members of Germany’s World Cup team were gay.
He is reported to have said that a former member of the national team was ready to out the team’s “bunch of gays” (Schwulencombo), and that a recent addition to the team was “half-gay”.
Osang further reports that Becker said that the national’s team’s new and elegant style of play was due to their homosexuality. He suggested that this style of play lost the team a place in the World Cup Final.
The alleged “homosexual conspiracies” (homosexuelle Verschwörung) in the German national team were common knowledge to sports journalists, says Osang.
Bayer Leverkusen, the team Ballack will return to after he has left Chelsea FC, for whom he currently plays, said in a statement that they had “absolutely no resentment” towards homosexuals.
Homosexuality in football is largely a taboo subject in Germany, and only one professional player, Marcus Urban, has ever come out, and then only after his career was over.
It is estimated that 10 per cent of players in the Bundesliga are gay.
