“Those who are gay should say so,” the Schalke and Germany player told Bunte magazine. “It relieves a burden.
“And the fans will get over it quickly. What matters is the performance delivered by the player, not his sexual preference.”
Homosexuality still remains a taboo in Germany’s Bundesliga, although it is being discussed more frequently.
In November last year Bayern Munich striker Mario Gómez also urged gay players to come out , claiming that if they did so they would feel “liberated”.
According to die Zeit newspaper, the homosexuality of some of Germany’s professional footballers is an open secret but only one, Marcus Urban, has ever come out, after his career was over.
It is reported that Sir Alex Ferguson is interested in bringing Neuer over to play from Manchester United.
