Professional footballer comes out
10 March 2011
Anton Hysén, who plays for the Swedish second-division team of Utsiktens BK made the announcement in Offside magazine.
“I am a footballer and gay,” he said. “If I perform as a footballer then I do not think if it matters if I like girls or boys.”
Hysén, who is the son of former Liverpool player Glenn Hysén, admitted that his decision to come out might affect his career but said that any homophobic insults would only make him more determined to play well.
“There will always be people who can’t tolerate gay people just as there people who can’t tolerate immigrants.
“A club might be interested in me and then the coach might change his mind if he finds out I’m gay, but that is his problem, not mine.”
Hysén also said that it was “totally sick” and “f***ed up” that no other professional footballers had come out.
