Welcoming ambience needed, says Government

Government to help gay footballers come out

 11 March 2011

Speaking at Commons question time, Conservative MP Mark Menzies referred to the recent coming out of cricketer Stephen Davies and the earlier one of rugby player Gareth Thomas.

Noting that the two men’s coming out had been welcomed by the general public and their respective sports, he asked Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone what the Government was doing to create a similar welcoming atmosphere in football.

Ms Featherstone offered her congratulations to Davies and Thomas and replied:

“Obviously it is very important and we look forward to working with the Football Association to create an atmosphere and ambience where footballers also feel free to come forward and come out if they wish.

“Not just for the sake of the league and themselves but also for the sake of youngsters all over the country who should be able to play on any field of sport free of any kind of discrimination.”
