IGLFA

This summer London plays host to the International Gay and Lesbian Football Association (IGLFA) World Championships.

Teams entered from all over the world will descend on London from 24th - 30th August in order to win the sought after World Championship title.

The IGLFA was set up in 1980, with the main aim and contributing purpose to bring the gay and lesbian community together, encouraging respect and understanding from others. It now boasts an impressive network of football clubs and teams around the world.

In 1992 the IGLFA held their first European Championship and established their first governing board of directors, along with the formulation and adoption of its mission statement, constitution, and bylaws, showing they were serious about making a difference.

The World Championships competition is a fun but competitive event, and was first held in 1997. Since then the competition, and its teams, have gone from strength to strength, with previous hosts of the competition including Cologne, (2000), Sydney (2002) and San Francisco (2004).

The tournament is split into three categories: men’s eleven-a-side, Divisions One and Two, and a women’s seven-a-side Division. Any team can enter (entries close on 31st July) and to date there are over fifty teams from six continents taking part.

The matches will be played on seventeen great-quality pitches at Regent’s Park, accessible to everyone. The Division One final will be played at Leyton Orient FC's Matchroom Stadium in East London on 30th August.

This promises to be a great event, full of enthusiasm and pride. So go down and cheer on the world-class teams, showing your support!
