Stonewall FC are the worldââ¬â¢s gay football champions.
The English team defeated the Argentinean team Safgay FC by a decisive 5-0 on Saturday 30th August.
The match, which was organised by the International Gay & Lesbian Football Association, was held at Leyton Orient’s league ground with the full support of the Football Association.
Stonewall has previously won the Gay Football World Championship in 2002 and 2006, and won the European Gay Football Championship last month. This year they faced stiff competition from teams from around the world including the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia and the Czech Republic.
Among Stonewall’s supporters was human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell who said: “In the gay football championships the British teams are world beaters.
“This championship challenges the machismo and homophobia that is often associated with football in many parts of the world.
“Gay footballers help break down stereotypes and prejudice. They are ambassadors for gay inclusion and equality. Gay football enhances understanding and acceptance of gay and lesbian people.”
