RFU club were fined for racist and homophobic jokes
A rugby team has been fined ã2,500 for publishing homophobic jokes in a programme
The Cornish club RFC, Lyskeard-Looe, was fined by a Rugby Football Union (RFU) disciplinary panel after publishing allegedly, sexist, racist and homophobic jokes in a commemorative programme for their EDF Junior vase semi-final.
The RFU found the club guilty of conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game.
The unnamed individual responsible for the material has been banned for life from having any further association with the club.
In a statement Lyskiard-Looe said:
“We were shocked and disgusted by the contents and launched a full internal investigation upon discovery of the material….
"Liskeard-Looe RFC is proud of the diversity of its members and players. During the long history of the club it has enjoyed the service of a number of overseas and UK players from various cultures and nationalities. These individuals have contributed not only to the game, but the ethos of the club as a whole.
“We as the club, apologise unreservedly to the RFU and to those who have had sight of this material."
The other body in the sport, the Rugby Football League recently became a Stonewall Diversity Champion and committed itself to confronting homophobia in the sport.
