Semenya gets makeover and keeps medal
Caster Semenya, the 800m world champion in Berlin, has learned that she will keep her medal whatever the outcome of her gender test results, and has posed for the cover of South Africa's You magazine in a makeover displaying her more feminine side.
"I am who I am and I am proud of myself. I'd like to dress up more often and wear dresses but I never get the chance. I'd also like to learn to do my own makeup," says the 18-year-old, who was photographed in several outfits, including black leather trousers with a sequined top, a grey knee-length dress worn with a grey cropped jacket and a black and white cocktail dress worn with stilettos.
Semenya's deep voice, masculine build and suddenly improved performance led to speculation over her sex and prompted the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) to order a gender test, the results of which will be published within two weeks.
"There is no automatic disqualification of results in a case like this," Davies said. "This is not a doping case at present so it shouldn't be considered as one where you have a retroactive stripping of results."
Given that she was ultimately allowed to compete despite the findings of initial tests before the World Athletics Championships in Berlin that prompted the IAAF to ask Athletics South Africa to withdraw her from their team, Davies said it would be "legally very difficult" to ask Semenya to hand back her medal.
