Celine Dion
By: John Howard

Celine

She's the biggest-selling female singer of all time (yes, more than Madonna and Diana Ross and Sonia). We caught up with Celne in Vegas and asked

"If my son's a gay person, he's not any less of my son or any less happy for that"

So, have you ever seen a drag queen doing Celine Dion?

Actually, yes. A few. And good, I have to say. There's a lot of gay people come and see the show. And I work with a lot of gay people as well. I have to say we do work pretty well together. I think I have a very strong personality and I'm very strong in my gestures and I think they like that from me.

Did you learn anything about yourself from those drag queens?

I'm not going to say, "Oh, my god - do I do that?" No. I look at what they do... actually sometimes they really make me laugh backstage: they put on my stuff and do my gestures and try to make me laugh. It works!

Fire them!

You know what? I think gay people know how to have fun. Life is fun and precious. And if you can't have a good time and just play then it's not worth it. You have to have a good time. Go out there and speak out...

How would you feel if your six-year-old son came to you at some stage and said, "Mum, I've got something to tell you..."?

That he's gay? He's my son and I love him! I'm not against that. I mean, it's not "Mum, I want to be gay", it's "Mum, I am gay". This is his soul, this is his heart, this is his sex and his way of living and who he sleeps with. This is his happiness. That's all I want. I want him to be happy. I want him to be successful as a human being. It's not a mistake and it's not a disappointment. I want my son to be able to talk to me. I'm with him. I wanted that son. If he's a gay person, he's not any less of my son or any less happy for that. I want him to be able to achieve as much happiness as possible as a human being.

A lot of parents have very fixed ideas about how their children's lives are going to pan out...

I'm guiding my son with my love. But he's not Celine. René-Charles is René-Charles. If René-Charles wants long hair (and he has incredibly long hair for a six-year-old), he can have long hair. It's his hair! René-Charles, if you're gay, you're gay. We love you. We have gay men in our family already, so we're already very open about that...
