Your new song 'Keeps Gettin' Better' is all about being comfortable with your own sexuality. Are you affected by other people's impressions of you?
I try not to be. Doing what I do there are so many judgements being thrown at you all the time but there comes a point when you have to block it out and do what's right for you. I don't change myself based on what other people think of me. I think that it's really important for everyone to be free to express themselves and how they feel.
Do you think your individuality is a result of your difficult childhood?
I grew up in a household where domestic violence happened and I never really felt safe in my home environment. But traumatic experiences at a really young age weigh heavy on you throughout your life. It's a constant healing process.
Your videos are always very camp and in 'Beautiful' there are gay boys kissing. What was the thinking behind that?
I wanted to target things that a lot of people aren't very open-minded to because I wanted that video to be about how everyone should feel comfortable in their own skin, regardless of what people think. What we call our imperfections are really the qualities that make us unique.
How do you feel about your status as a gay icon?
I love hearing that. I have many friends who are outwardly gay and they're constantly pushing to be heard and given equal rights. I think there's a lot of unfairness that goes with being gay and so the more that I can give that a voice, then I'll do so.
Is it true that you like looking at photos of women?
I do! I think that women are really beautiful beings and I think that sometimes the sight of a naked female can be more arousing than a man. Sexuality is sexuality. I think we should all be free to enjoy what we enjoy. We like what we like.
Have you ever experimented with women?
That's for me to know!
Civil partnerships are taking off everywhere else but in America there seems to be so much controversy about it all...
There is. But I think at the same time we'd be fooling ourselves if we thought that everywhere was accepting of gay rights and gay marriage. I think it's really unfair that there has to be some kind of standard for marriage. It should be about celebrating two people's love for each other. It shouldn't have anything to do with someone's sexual preference.
Speaking of which, how's married life treating you?
Good. Really good. You know when it's the right person...it's just a beautiful place right now.
Do you think you've changed in any way since getting hitched?
In America a lot of the press were saying how I've changed and how I've given up being provocative because I'm changing for a guy. The last thing I would ever do is change for someone else!
And how does Jordan [her husband] feel about that?
He always says, "You look hot, I don't mind people looking at you like that because at the end of the day you're coming home to me." If anything he just backs it one hundred per cent, always giving me the attitude that if you've got it, flaunt it!
