Your new album Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams has a very Motown vibe, tell us about it…
Yeah, I’m very excited about it. I grew up on that style of music. My parents played Motown endlessly, Marvin Gaye, and then my mum was actually in a 60s girl group called The Veltones. I drew a lot of inspiration from that.
Who did you work with on the album?
Pharrell Williams on the first single [‘I Decided’]. He’s really cool. I worked with him on my first album when I was about 15 and this time round I described for him the kind of sound I was going for and it took him a couple of tries before he really really got it. I also got Q Tip, Mark Ronson… He’s huge there. It was bizarre. He’s like James Bond. He wears suits on a daily basis. Extra-super fly.
Did you get on with him?
Get it on with him? No, no, no, no. It was all super professional. I like to keep it professional. This was in Los Angeles.
Who are your friends in LA?
I don’t have any friends in LA, they’re all in Houston. I just stay in and sleep and hang out with my son a lot and I work. This is my main home unfortunately, so my life’s pretty dull. I don’t want to make friends with the girls here, they’re crazy. But they’re crazy in different ways. I’m crazy because I have a lot of ‘don’t give a ****’ in my bloodline.
Does Beyoncé give you career advice?
No. She’s selfish. She keeps it all for herself! When we see each other we mostly just talk about shoes and bags and who’s showing their tits in LA that week. Like girls do. They don’t talk about their careers with each other.
Is she the good girl and you’re the naughty one?
That’s how people like to see it, yeah.
You don’t come across as a good Christian girl though!
I’m super duper in love with Christ but I have my struggles like everyone else. And he has a sense of humour if you read the bible. Some things that happen in my life, I think, ‘Wow, Jesus has a sense of humour!’ He does!
Are you still with the father of your child?
No, I kicked him to the kerb. No, we are actually cool for the sake of my son but we were married, got a divorce, the Big D. I got married when I was a baby, just 17. But it’s all OK. I’m like James Brown: single and ready to mingle.
What boys do you go for?
All kind of boys. It really goes all over the place: skater boys, ghetto boys, artsy boys. But no one at the moment. I’m chilling.
Any naughtiness on the first date?
Hell to the no. I’m a traditional Christian girl. I’m not traditional in that way but in my moral ways I try to be. I’m real wifey material. And I’m a pretty good girlfriend.
Have you ever been to a gay club?
Absolutely, there’s a place in Houston I go to. There’s a weekend called Splash weekend in Houston, which is great. [Black gay pride event].
And have you ever had any gay experiences? Any girl-on-girl?
No, no Katy Perry. She has a number one song called ‘Kissed a girl’. I was drilled as I was growing up that it wasn’t right but I’ve never wanted to kiss a girl. I don’t like kissing. I’m serious. I just don’t like the exchange of saliva. I’m serious! I don’t like feet and I don’t like saliva. I’m pretty traditional. I’m strictly dickly and one at a time. And mostly likely close to marriage or at least in love.
You’re missing out. Sex is so much fun!
It is fun, that’s why you have to find one dope sexcapade and keep it consistent. That’s just my view though. Doesn’t matter what I say. Sex away, people, sex away!
So, what would you say if in the future your son told you he was gay?
You know I have so many close friends and family who are completely happy and so in love and have more solid relationships than straight people. So I would embrace that. Love at the end of the day, no matter what form or fashion, is what matters.
