"Iââ¬â¢m a girl who knows what she wants"
How does it feel having had a number one album?
When I found out it was the best day of my life, seriously!
Do you like the fame side of it all?
If it’s music appreciation, then yeah. Imagine walking around with your boyfriend and you’ve got the fucking pappos in your face! I’ll have to do what Princess Margaret used to do - grab the camera, smash it, throw some money at them and shout, ‘Bill me!’
So you seeing anyone at the moment?
Not seeing anyone at the moment, no.
Are you starting to look at boys differently, now that they’re probably looking at you differently!
Little bit, yeah. I reckon I’d think twice about seeing a stranger, but there are plenty of friends and friends-of-friends I fancy, so nothing to worry about there!
You’re pretty candid about talking about relationships in your music.
Yeah, boys have totally broken my heart! It’s because I’m so open to being loved! I like love, you see!
Have there been any tense moments with love rivals?
There was actually, I was at this gig a while back and this girl just came and sat on my boyfriend’s lap! And she was literally about twelve, mate! I just pushed her off and she ran away ‘cause she was so little.
There’s looking, and then there’s sitting on your boyfriend’s lap!
I do mind ‘em looking though! (laughs) But I’m not a bunny-boiler or anything like that! I’m totally alright with my boyfriends having female friends, just so long as they know it’s my boyfriend!
And why would they need anyone else!
Exactly! I’m a girl who knows what she wants.
Which is a very sexy thing.
Oh it is, isn’t it! Look at us, trying to make excuses.
You already have a reputation for your voice – are you precious with it?
God no, I smoke 30 a day!
Adds texture!
Yeah! It’s good for my voice, but bad for my lungs. I find myself having to sit down the whole time. You know, after dancing along to really slow songs!
So you’re still living with your mum!
Yeah! I was going to move out, but then I spent my deposit in Burberry.
You went to the Brit School as well as Amy Winehouse and Kate Nash?
Yeah, I did. I really liked it actually. Amy’s older than me, and she only went for a little while ‘cause she hated it. She either hated it and left before she got kicked out, or she hated it and got kicked out. Can never remember. Katie Melua was there as well, who’s actually really lovely. She gets a bit of stick for being boring. I think she’s a really lovely girl and really nice. And Kate was a year above me – we were really good mates.
Do you influence each other, or ask for each other’s opinion on your music?
No, not at all. Kate’s stuff is too literal for me. I like to hide behind things a bit. I like people to have to guess what I’m on about in a way. Rather than like, this is about my bed.
You keep getting compared to Amy Winehouse – would you rather you were just your own person?
Not at all! Amy’s amazing, so I like being compared to her. Also, when I read about new artists and if they’re compared to someone that I know, I’m more likely to remember them and go and check them out.
If you could be compared to anybody, who would that be?
Etta James. Absolutely adore her. And she used to write her own songs as well.
Adele’s genius album, 19, is out now.
