Relate's top 10 tips for keeping the love alive

It’s easy to think that once you’re in a relationship, it’s all plain sailing. But in reality, all relationships need work. Here are Relate’s top 10 tips for keeping things fresh, fun and affectionate.

·         Make time. Turn off the TV and your laptop and spend some quality time together.

·         Communicate. When you know someone well, it’s easy to think you’ll have nothing new to say to each other, but that’s not true. Make sure you always ask how your partner’s day was, and make sure you listen when they tell you.

·         Dream. There’s nothing wrong with a little daydreaming. In fact, dreaming about your future life together (even if it’s far too extravagant to really happen) is a good way of keeping yourselves on the same track.

·         Learn something new together. Couples can grow together by learning and exploring a new activity or hobby.

·         Touch. Physical contact is important for more than just your sex life. Be affectionate with each other, whether it’s a peck on the cheek, a hug, or having sex.

·         Laugh. Laughter releases endorphins that are nature’s feel-good chemicals. Engage in something lighthearted, and don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself.

·         Be open about your feelings. The more you share your emotions the closer you’ll feel. If something is making you unhappy, you can’t solve it unless your partner knows. Equally, if they’re doing something right that’s making you happier, let them know, so they can keep doing it.

·         Be thoughtful. One of the best ways of communicating that you love someone is by doing little things to show them. Make a cup of tea, ask how they are, buy in a favourite food, do some housework for them.

·         Spice up your sex life. If your sex life has become boring then talk to your partner about how you can make things more exciting. Try some new positions or locations, some new techniques or some toys.

·         Remember to say "I love you." It's easy to think you don't need to say it because they already know, but no-one can hear those three words too often.
