Soak up the sun at home

Soak up the sun on holiday at home

"Loungers are perfect for those seeking the ultimate tan, even if it can be more difficult to sip the gin and tonic without spillage"

Luckily none of us got our hopes up too high about a spectacular summer this year.

However, the potential for great weather, coupled with the challenging economic climate could also lead to a few more “stay at home” vacations.

If we are looking at the prospect of basking in endless sunshine in our own back gardens, then it has to be time to invest in some comfortable garden seating.

So why not indulge yourself and splash out on something a little more unusual to inject that holiday feel?

Those with traditional taste can hardly go wrong with the bold, modern striped appeal of the Hardwood Deckchair from Tesco, a relative snip at £20 (www.tesco.com; 0800 505555).

However, if you love these chairs, but hanker for something a little more quirky, help is at hand from Rume in the form of their playful Lettuce & Rabbit Design (£115 – www.rume.co.uk; 01273 777 810).

Loungers are perfect for those seeking the ultimate tan, even if it can be more difficult to sip the gin and tonic without spillage (probably a good idea to invest in a packet of straws at the same time to ensure success!).

If you are foregoing the Seychelles this year why not settle into a Deluxe Teak Sun-lounger from Kit Stone.  Reminiscent of only the best resorts, they provide eight lounging positions and have thick comfy cushions that are fully washable (£529 - www.kitstone.co.uk; 0870 777 0099).

However, if you want somewhere funky to wear this seasons Jackie O shades, consider reclining on a classic 60s lounger in hot pink or cobalt blue (£15 – www.littlewoodsdirect.com; 0844 822 2321).

The Beanbag, another icon of the 60s, has also re-emerged in the last decade.  Although originally re-introduced as a piece of interior furniture, the development of weather-proof and easy clean materials suitable for exterior use has seen the arrival of outdoor beanbags to areas outside of the Mediterranean in the last couple of years.

They cry out to be draped over and provide a shock proof surface for little ones to play around on without fear of hurt or breakage.  The Do-Nut Bean Bag from Prezzybox has masses of child appeal, is water resistant and can be used flat or lent against a wall to create a comfy seat that hugs your body (£150 – www.prezzybox.com; 0844 249 5007).

Alternatively, the innovative Supernova Conversion Lounger from Ambient Lounge has a more adult feel and functions both as a chair or sunlounger (£134; www.ambientlounge.co.uk).

Of course, nothing really smacks of relaxation than swinging in a hammock, suspended between a couple of palm trees.  Failing that ,you could hook one up at home between two apple trees and opt for a more South of France feel!

For those not too confident of the weather prediction Stylish Life offer a black cotton hammock for £19.99 (www.stylishlife.co.uk; 01269 822288).  However, optimists may want to choose the brightly coloured Baiana Hammock range from Drinkstuff, which is available in three different sizes (from £109.80 – www.drinkstuff.com; 0870 428 0958).

If you are planning never to go abroad again, then you should invest some serious money and consider my personal favourite hammock, the Wave from Royal Botania.

Who could resist its wonderful curve, as the whole structure appears to float from the single connection point?  At £13,995 it may be a little more than a Caribbean Cruise, but then it is likely to last a lot longer (www.encompassco.com; 02392 4120045).
